Should I use a website or blog for my snow plowing business?

This is a question that keeps coming up.  Should you choose a website or a blog for your online presence? ….and what exactly is the difference?

To understand this we first need to explain what each is and how they are different.

A blog actually is a type of website, so they are somewhat the same. Website is actually a broad term, there are many different kinds of websites.

A static HTML websites is what we are really talking about in this instance. A static website is “hard coded” and created in HTML, PHP, ASP or another web development computer language. Each page is an actual hard coded page that needs to be created and linked to the other hard coded pages. Normally you will have a home page, and various other pages connected together to become the “website”.

Through modern technology new ways to develop static websites have been created using  WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors.  These allow anyone who can use a word processor to develop webpages. There are also site templates and other tools to help automate the process.

A blog is totally different and is created dynamically using a database to create the needed webpages on the fly. This allows for much greater flexibility and functionality. With a blog you will have very few if any static pages.

You can still create as many pages as you like and link them to whatever you want. The real advantage comes in the site layout, design, and search capabilities. Since a blog is database driven and the pages are created on the fly, the whole layout and design can be changed in literally seconds. Some people change their sites layouts with the holidays. This is as simple as moving files around in windows explorer or my computer.

Blogs are also simple to add and remove pages, images and any kind of dynamic content you can imagine.  So think of a blog as a static website on steroids. Don’t get me wrong there are things you can do with webpages that would be more difficult in a blog, But for a local snow plowing business, landscaper, or most any small business there is no reason not to use a blog.
